Located just off the main highway, in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, Kona Overlook is a one acre property, perched on a platform lot, where the land then slopes down at the edge of the pool, leaving nothing but views as far as the eyes can see.

Kona Overlook has a gourmet kitchen, spacious bedrooms, renovated granite top bathrooms and frameless glass marble showers with pebblestone floors, making your guest experience feel like everything you want and need is in place.

of Kona Overlook
Where to start? This was our first time …
Tami P • December 2018

Where to start? This was our first time booking with an online company and our first time traveling this distance with our children who are all now grown with families of their own, so we were excited and nervous all at the same time. We were on the fence about booking through a hotel as we would need 5 bedrooms to accommodate our family. When we found the Kona Overlook on the Big Island, which boasted 7 bedrooms/7 bathrooms, there was no turning back. We were given the option to only rent 5 of the bedroom/bathrooms which is exactly what we did. Upon arriving at the home, we weren't sure what to expect as it was in a neighborhood and had a high fence that was connected to the garage, so we couldn't really see anything as far as the house was concerned. We could, however, see the view of the ocean which was breathtaking, so we were pretty anxious to get inside.

The caretaker, Dan, met us at the house (after we had made a quick stop at Costco to gather a few groceries, etc. and he was super chill about when we would arrive) and unlocked the gate. It was very exciting to see the beautiful infinity pool and the view of the ocean from there was even more incredible. We knew we had found our "home away from home". As each of our children made their way through the gate, it was fun seeing their reactions...we had left temperatures of 25 degrees, so they were thrilled to be in 80 degree weather for 8 days! As far as the house and grounds are concerned, everything was spotless (with the exception of a few places in the garage where the paint was chipped off the floor...but it's a garage so that's bound to happen). The bedrooms/bathrooms had everything you would need while traveling: there were a couple of blow dryers which was great since none of us had packed one; toilet paper and shampoo/conditioner and body wash in all the bathrooms.LOTS of towels for showering and LOTS of towels for swimming and trips to the beach. There were quite a few beach chairs and some boogie boards which was awesome as well.

The kitchen was huge and had a very large table with 10-12 chairs which was perfect for us if we wanted to eat inside...most of the time we ate outside on the upper lanai which boasted even more seating and a big BBQ grill. There was also plenty of seating and another BBQ grill and fridge down by the pool which we also utilized. The kitchen has virtually every kitchen appliance you could ever think of and plenty of spices and a few condiments in the fridge. We enjoyed cooking together and loved the view while we ate.

At first glance, we thought maybe the living space (tv and couch area) might be a bit on the small side, but it had more than enough room for all 10 of us and was quite cozy to watch movies and football games in the evenings. There were a few games, but a person may want to bring their favorites if you enjoy them.

We weren't exactly sure where the home was located in reference to anything since it was only our first time staying in that area. We were about 40 minutes from Costco (which is exactly how far we have to drive where we live, so it wasn't a big deal) and just a bit longer to our favorite place to boogie board, Hapuna Beach. It is a beautiful white sandy beach with lifeguards and bathroom facilities. It was high tide the days we were there, but everyone still managed to have an absolute blast! One of the highlights of the vacation, was finding a little beach called Two Step Beach (rocky only-no sand) which was literally 15 minutes away from the house. There, our family had the amazing opportunity to snorkel with wild dolphins and it didn't cost a dime. Truly an experience they will never forget. You need to know in advance to not bother the dolphins or their habitat as they will stop coming there in the mornings to feed. On our way, we found a cute little fruit stand with the sweetest little woman who owned the stand with her husband.

A friend had also told us that we HAD to eat at the Manago Hotel (it's the oldest hotel on the island...over 100 years old) so the 10 of us showed up on a Friday night. Without a reservation. At first, the server we spoke with was shocked we hadn't called ahead and we almost left, but another woman came over and told her they could figure it out and they were both so nice and pushed a couple of tables together for us. I had the Opaka Paka (a very delicious white fish which I would order again in a heartbeat) and most of the others had the pork chops which the hotel is famous for. None of us like the Pickled Seaweed or the weird sweet noodle dish they served, but it was an adventure to try them both to say the least!

We have learned through experience that if you want to find the best places to eat, you ask the locals where THEY eat and we weren't disappointed. For the BEST shave ice in the world, we found One Aloha Shave Ice Company...trust me, it was SO delicious! They make their own fruit juices/purees each day and the ice is more like snow. The owner was honestly one of the sweetest women we'd every met and kept complimenting us on our cute family. She asked if they could take our picture for their wall which was a fun surprise.

Another fun place we found the night before we left was Loko Wraps...super fun place with awesome guys who worked there. There pineapple cole slaw was yummy as was the taco plate and acai bowl!

We went zip-lining with the Umauma Falls Company and had an incredible and fun time! The guys who were our crew for the day were hilarious and fun and even talked our family into doing a human pyramid while they videotaped us...it was the only time we were rained on (it is on the Hilo side after all) and I was the only one who brought a rain jacket. It wasn't horrible though and only lasted a little while. And, you're in Hawaii! On our way back to the other side, we stopped at a little restaurant called, Tex Drive-In, for malasadas. They are a Portuguese donut and were HUGE! And delicious since we were all starving at that point since zip-lining took a bit longer than we had planned on.

We found another beach to snorkel at but it was a bit of a hike to get there, but again, it was super fun and entertaining. The time frame of our trip allowed us to attend meetings at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which was about 6 minutes from the house. It was so awesome to become instant friends with people you've just met and feel of their love. The local people we met were all so nice and we never felt nervous anywhere we went. To say it was a vacation to not be forgotten would be an understatement. None of us wanted to get back to life in the cold, except to see all the grandkids! We will definitely be back again at some point in the future with our tribe!
