From the Italy Experts: Favorite Fall Experiences

What’s fall in Italy mean? To our Villa Experts, the season is all about truffle hunts, olive oil harvests, and locally-made pizza – and of course wine.

Different seasons come with different things to do. And, in Italy, fall offers no shortage of experiences to discover. From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the serene Sorrento Coast, these are a few of our experts favorite things to do this season.

Truffle Hunting
Experiencing a truffle hunt first-hand is a truly incredible adventure – especially from September to December.

Experience a truffle hunt in Italy.

During this time, hunters are in pursuit of the precious white truffle, which is born in wilderness areas. Thus, the path to get these is a bit harder, though well worth the reward, as they’re definitely more impressive than other varieties.

Because of their specialized noses, dogs help guide the way on truffle hunts.

Along the path, you’ll be accompanied by a guide and dogs (the real leaders of the hunt, thanks to their specialized snouts). After returning from your search, you’ll be greeted with a local-based lunch showcasing unearthed truffles, as well as good local wine.

Savor local dishes featuring freshly unearthed truffles.

Olive Oil Tours & Tastings
Though you can enjoy olive oil tours and tastings throughout the year, the actual pressing of the olives only happens from late October to December.

Learn all about the making of olive oil on a guided tour.

During this time, you can witness the olive press in full swing, and learn all about the process – how it’s extracted, modern techniques, the effects of the weather, and more.

Plus, you’ll also have the opportunity to sample different varieties, which barely resemble those bought in grocery stores. (Think intense aromas and slightly spicy flavors.)

Gourmet Tours
Enjoy food? Then you’d better make sure your fall travels lead you to Sorrento.

Explore lemon groves and dairy farms before enjoying an authentic Italian meal.

There are plenty of iconic local food and drink spots to explore, as well as incredible experiences to try. On a tour, you can explore a 200-year-old lemon grove (and taste freshly-squeezed lemonade) and then visit a dairy farm to learn about cheese-making techniques.

After, you’ll enjoy the products of the farm with a lunch of pizza, made by your favorite chef – you! – accompanied by an expert pizzaiolo (pizza maker).
